Brain Tumor Biorepository

The Brain Tumor Biorepository is the tumor tissue bank of the Department of Neurosurgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Established as part of the “Brain Tumor Lab” in the early 90’s to save surgical specimens, it has grown over the years to become a sizable collection containing near 600 frozen brain tumor specimens and primary tumor cells. This collection contains primarily adult gliomas but also includes specimens of meningioma, medulloblastoma, and brain metastases. Since 2016, under Dr. Viapiano direction, the Brain Tumor repository has started to collect blood matched to the adult glioma specimens, has prepared dozens of cultures of glioma stem cells (GSCs), and has started a systematic profiling of GSCs by next-generation sequencing. Specimens can be shared through collaborative and material-transfer agreements.
